2006 Aquila d’Oro Toscana

Price: $3.99 @ Trader Joe’s imported by Santini Fine Wines

What They Said:

Found some limited coverage on the Chianti that was favorable but nothing on this one…

What I Think:

When I bought this one I actually thought I was getting this Toscana. Later when I matched up the labels I realized that was not the case. Certainly cause for concern given my spotty history with wines from northern Italy. Not to be worried here. This one is a winner, light and fruity with a racy acidic backbone. Perfect match for tomato sauce! Try it with your pasta tonight, I’ll be doing the same as I grabbed another bottle.

Had a second bottle of this and again enjoyed. Given my looming deadline for the top 10 of March I also had a bottle of the Nero d’ Avola that ranked #9 last month. This one is light with racy acid where as the Nero has much heavier fruit with earthy undertones that make it a much more rustic effort. There may be room for both after all…

Dreadful stuff, start to finish. Tight, narrow-tasting… gaaah.

Sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy it. Did you have it with a meal? If so what? Are there any Italian wines you like at Trader Joe’s?

Bough my bottle a few weeks ago at TJ’s and your blog inspired me to uncork mine now. Just tasted it, and like you said, light and acidic (but not too acidic, easy to drink). Had a few sips with some cheddar cheese and was quite nice.

I gotta say, I like the TJ’s Nero d’Avola (by Ruggero di Tasso) better at this point, but I’m looking forward to tasting it with some pasta as you suggested and see if magic happens…

I am a fan of the Nero d’ Avola as well. Obviously completely different styles. Have you had the Epicuro Aglianico?

  6. Sum Says:

Finally, I’m having the Aquila d’Oro Toscana with some tomato basil spaghetti with TJ’s sweet Italian sausages. It’s just a little paradise in my mouth when they all came together. My wife loved it just as much.

    Thanks for the suggestion!

I haven’t tried the Epicuro Aglianico, but I’ll certainly keep an eye on it next time at TJ’s.
