2007 Novella Synergy Blanc

Price: $4.99 @ Trader Joe’s

What They Said:

Per the bottle “In the tradition of our popular Paso Robles red Synergy blend, we are very pleased to offer this special winemaker’s cuvee of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Muscat Canneli and Pinot Grigio. These varietals collectively highlight the diversity and quality of the Paso Robles appelation. Enjoy this unique and refreshing blend with soft, mild cheeses or baked chicken.”

What I Think:

I stumbled across this one when reading about a customer service story. My first shot of getting my hands on this brought the Chardonnay home. While not bad it was easily forgettable. This one, however, stands up and catches your attention. An interesting blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Muscat Canneli and Pinot Grigio with percentages unknown (I emailed the winery to see if they will provide them for us). The order here is from the bottle and typically the first grape listed is the largest percentage wise. While I get grass and mineral (Sauvignon Blanc) on the nose the initial palate is more green apples (Chardonnay without the oak) so guessing those two grapes are almost equally accounted for. The Muscat appears briefly around mid-palate adding a nice touch of sweetness and finishing with a pleasant lingering citrus flavor. A very pleasing effort and one that I will be buying more of.

Rating: Buy It

Editor’s Note (19-Oct-2008):

I emailed the winery to try and get the tasting notes to determine what the blend percentage was here and surprisingly heard back (thanks AC!). As I guessed the order was true to the percentages and the mix was 55.6% Sauvignon Blanc, 40.8% Chardonnay, 3.3% Muscat Canelli and 0.3% Pinot Grigio. Looking forward to my next bottle!

  1. Great review. I picked this up last night and haven’t tried it yet. Excited now! I would also suggest you give the Novella Muscat Canelli a shot. It’s really tasty and very inexpensive for a Muscat. I had tried this one first and decided to grab a bottle of Synergy to check it out. It’s defnitely a little sweet though. I like to have a glass after dinner in lieu of dessert.

  2. I loved this wine so much, as you saw on the cooking blog. Great blog you have, by the way, I am becoming a regular visitor! :) Keep up the great work!

P.S. I’d be interested to hear what you think of Kelsey See Canyon Vineyards. My husband and I are members there, and our friends can’t seem to get enough of their Apple Chardonnay and Apple Merlot. Their port is also fantastic.

  3. @Karen Your comment slipped through the cracks, apologies. I’ve added the Muscat to my list and will grab a bottle if it is still available.

@Camille Thanks for the kind words. Kelsey See Canyon Vineyards is a new one to me. Given my Wisconsin upbringing I am somewhat familiar with fruit wine, cherry is the most popular there. Guessing it is hard to come by but I will keep my eye out.

  4. I dunno, intriguing but ironically I think it lacks synergy, or symmetry. The blend doesn’t quite blend. Certainly more singular than a corporate Cali Chardonnay though, and the price is right..

  5. hello…I am looking for this wine…any Novella synergy will do…I’d prefer the 03 vintage, because the bottle is so beautiful…LOL..im trying to buy it for my friend, Novella for her birthday, but cant find it anywhere….any ideas??.im in nashville, tn
