2008 Picton Bay Sauvignon Blanc

2008 Picton Bay Sauvignon BlancPrice: $5.99 @ Trader Joe’s imported by L. Watson Inc.

What They Said:

Per the bottle “Picton, at the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island is the gateway to Marlborough. Our wine is produced from world famous Marlborough vineyards. Picton Bay Sauvignon Blanc is classic Marlborough in style – vibrant, fresh and fruity.”

What I Think:

Nose of lemon, custard…almost jolly rancherish. Some candied grapefruit lingering in the background. In the mouth, tart and bracing. Some sour lemons on the palate. Tons of mineral and a lot of acidity. It doesn’t have the balance I am looking for at times coming off as overly grassy. This one isn’t bad but I know of two more New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc’s at Trader Joe’s that I prefer; the King Shag ($7) and the Kono ($8). Should the Kiwi style not work for you the Geyser Peak ($8) is also a winner.

Rating: Skip It (with the caveat that if you are not a fan of those Sauv Blanc’s above this one is well worth trying)

  1. @Marlyn As mentioned in the post I liked this wine I just preferred the King Shag. That said the rating was a little harsh so I have gone ahead and added a disclaimer there. BTW, I wish all of my disagreements were this pleasant. You get a $6 SB you love and I get one for $7. Enjoy!

  2. TJ clerk recommended Picton Bay SB to me last week and we loved it. Have tried almost all their SBs, but not King Shag yet. Will have to do a side by side comparison…if I must, to see which I like the most.

  3. I was recommended Picton Bay by the wine guy in Trader Joes. LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I’m a Malborough girl – also like the Oyster Bay. Thank you! I lost my last favorite as it was discontinued. SB from Africa.

  4. @Joolzs: Are you talking about the Zarafa SB?
It was TOS for a while, but recently became available again, at least in the Bay Area.
Check out the Sauvignon Republic SB from South Africa ($7) as well and see what you think.

  5. @Coco If you are the curious type, certainly do the side by side. And to double the fun do it blind. If not just stick with the one you like. If you go for it would love to hear the results!

@Joolzs Glad to hear your a fan! Are you literally a Marlborough girl? I visited back in ’03 and would love to get back sometime soon. Was the SB from South Africa the Zarafa @Angela mentions below? The Sauvignon Republic she mentions is quite good and worth a try!

@Angela I had the Sauvignon Republic from South Africa and was a fan. Definitely worth a try for all. Review on that one coming shortly!

  6. Hi,
