2008 Domaine de la Fouquette Rosee d’Aurore

Price: $14.99 @ Vintage Wine & Spirits imported by Wine Agencies

What They Said:

2008 Domaine de la Fouquette Rosee d'AurorePer K&L Wines “A lovely wine from a beautiful part of France, the 35-acre Domaine de la Fouquette sits at the heart of the Cotes de Provence appellation. This is an environmentally friendly estate that works without chemicals and hand harvests entirely. The cepage is 65% Grenache and 30% Cinsault. A small amount of the white grape Rolle (5% – aka Vermentino in Italy) is added, elevating the citrus aromatics and acidity.”

What I Think:

I’m still searching for my summer Rose. With none in the house I decided to stop by Vintage Wine & Spirits, one of my local shops here in Mill Valley, and this was their pick. A bit pricey for an every weekend sipper for me but given it was from Provence I was willing to give it a try.

I’d normally call this salmon but it was amazingly pale in color (which I hope I captured in the picture). Loads of delicate strawberry notes on an aromatic nose rolled out the welcome mat. Though the color was light the body was medium. The strawberries were joined by citrus notes early on the palate before they were met with a bracing, refreshing acidity. Mineral notes shined through on a dry crisp finish. A nice bottle for sure but not worthy of splurging on all summer long. Anyone have any Rose recommendations around $10 for me?

  1. Not sure if you can find it in your area, but Kalyra (a Santa Barbara / Santa Maria winery) makes an AMAZING Merlot Rosé. Beautiful nose! Very strawberry, maybe a hint of lemon zest, vanilla…? A little bit rich for a rosé, but delicious! At the winery it’s $16, usually sells for about $12 in regular markets.

  2. I can recommend my favorite rose, at present. It’s the ’07 Toad Hollow Eye of the Toad at Bevmo. Hits all the right notes for me and has been one of my my secret little treasures this spring and summer. $9.99 @ Bevmo, but I picked mine up on an earlier sale @ Bevmo for $7.99. Cheers!

  3. @Umamia Thanks for the tip. By the way, did you know Kalyra wines are available at Trader Joe’s under the Santa Ynez Valley Winery label? I’ve enjoyed the Gewurzt and Cab Franc. Fingers crossed for a rose showing up…

@Danny Thanks again for the tip, I added this one to the watch list. Picking up the Delas at K&L tomorrow so stay tuned there…

  4. @Jeff I’ve actually had the La Ferme Rose, looks like based on your review our assessment is about the same. Hoping to find something in the $8 range I really enjoy drinking. Funny enough, whenever I travel I always find the Rose’s to be a steal. I was drinking a great one in Greece for the equivalent of $6. Now if I could only find it here…

  5. The Marques de Caceres Rose is pretty good, and it’s only $7. You also might try the Big House label, which is around there, but I haven’t had it since Randal Graham sold the winery, so who knows if it’s actually good anymore. It was a couple of years ago.

  6. @Jeff Think I’ve had the Marques de Caceres as well but due to sloppy record keeping can’t prove it. The Big House is one I will keep an eye out for though. Thanks for the suggestions.

  7. Check out this great under $10 Rose. There are several more at the same store around the $10 mark

The Toad Hollow is good too – (see previous comment) – had one at the weekend while in Mammoth – also found at Bevmo (my least favorite store!)

  8. @Wilf Thanks! Somewhat blind luck given it was an iPhone shot but it was a fine Summer Day!

@Paddy Thanks for the tip, I’ll see if I can find this one in the Bay Area… In the mean time I’ll ponder going to BevMo for the Toad Hollow. Our feelings toward that store are aligned…

  9. A local store is pricing the Toad Hollow Eye of the Toad rose at $6.99 versus $9.99 at Bevmo. Consistently pleasing to me. Great as an apertif or with food. Bulk Buy recommendation.
