This wine was 100% barrel-fermented and was put through 100% malolactic fermentation, but the oak is kept in the background.” (12/08)

90 points from Wine Enthusiast: “A beautiful Chardonnay, with a chalky minerality that anchors and braces ripe fruit flavors of Bosc pears and pineapples, subtlely accented with new smoky oak. Bone dry, this polished wine shows lots of finesse and complexity.” (02/09)

What I Think:

First off, for those that may have find this posting by accident (as well as for those that may have forgotten), please be aware that I am not a fan of the vast majority of California Chardonnay. I prefer fruit to oak and find that for my taste many come across as unbalanced. This leads me in the direction of those that are made using stainless steel or in some other unoaked fashion. The Catch 22 here is that my wife loves California Chard and in an effort to keep a happy household it is a good idea for me to put my personal wishes aside and “suck it up” every now and again. And that is the long way of telling you how the La Crema found its way to my table recently.

The wine was medium gold in color. The nose made me immediately step back as I was overtaken by oak. When I put my nose back in the glass I found some white fruit notes. On the palate, you get the rich, creamy texture (which usually lets me know secondary malolactic fermentation occurred) with subdued apple/pear flavors and the faintest hint acidity. The finish delivers the oak barrel in spades with buttery caramel and vanilla flavors that linger for a bit before fading away. My take here is that either the fruit is slightly underwhelming or the oak is overwhelming. That said on my “butter scale” this one is not on the popcorn side and when paired with food (roasted chicken) had its merits, perhaps I am getting accustomed.

To prove I’m not in the majority here let’s see take a peek at what the critics had to say. Parker said “…a subtle note of oak. … but the oak is kept in the background.” And the Enthusiast this “…subtlely accented with new smoky oak.” And they both scored it 90 points. Yip, I guess I am way overly sensitive to oak. Guess I’ll keep trying to refine my palate though, for the good of my marriage!

    I too prefer stainless chards that present those peachy, pineapple, pear and granny smith apple flavors. However, might I recommend the Merryvale 2007 CarnerosChardonnay at about $24. It scored a WS 91 and I really do love it. It’s oak and buttery backbone are completely invisible. What came forth for me, instead, was a classic and delicious experience, Cheers!

    Haven’t tried the 07 La Crema, but I have tried earlier vintages. I found them enjoyable but not too memorable. Oak doesn’t bother me as much as it bothers some. On the topic of chards, I’ve been enjoying the ’07 California chardonnay from Snap Dragon. It’s crisp and refreshing with a solid backbone of good fruit. I’m not picking up much oak if any from it. Best of all, it’s going for $8.00 here at Diablo Foods in Lafayette. I seem to remember it being a WS best buy a few issues back. I picked up half a case and I’ve been enjoying it for weeks. Give it a try, I think you’ll like it.

  3. Attention Jason’s Wine Blog chardonnay shoppers. Two very nice chardonnay values at Bevmo’s current 5 cent sale are worth your consideration, IMHO.
    Chardonnay #1 is Wildhurst Chardonnay Reserve 2008 @ $15.04 for two 750 ML bottles—well integrated with many classic flavors & aromas including apple, pear, crushed green olive, kerosene and toasty oak; full bodied, powerful, colors of gold w/ edges of platinum and lt green. Rating–Somewhere Between Bulk Buy and Wow (recommend you try one bottle before a bulk buy; also, I find this wine similar to the $26 to $80 current offerings of chardonnays by Merryvale Vineyards in Napa).
    Chardonnay #2 is Sonoma Landing Chardonnay 2005 @ $10.04 for two 750 ML bottles—–pale platinum, almost clear in color, with granny smith apple, lemon, light pineapple and grass flavors & aromas; sleek, alive and refreshing, medium bodied. Rating-Somewhere Between Buy It/Bulk Buy.

  4. The 2008 Wildhurst Chardonnay Reserve has been selling out from select BevMo locations. I recommend sampling either the Wildhurst or the other value chardonnay shown in my post directly above before they disappear. Bevmo’s applicable sale expires 9pm, Sunday, 11/8/09

  5. @Danny thanks for the many recommendation. Hope some readers are jumping on those. as for me, at this point, my appetite for paying a special visit to BevMo to buy Chardonnay doesn’t exist. That said, if I find myself in the building guessing these will find their way into the cart.

    @joshiemac Hearing about a case buy is always compelling…Ditto my above thoughts but I will keep my eye out for this one.

  6. i’m shocked at how quickly the price on la crema has increased in the last couple years. i remember picking this stuff up at around $8 not long ago – not sure it’s worth it in the mid-high teens.
