2009 Green Fin White Wine

2009 Green Fin White WinePrice: $3.99 @ Trader Joe’s

What They Said:

Per the bottle “This Green Fin White Table Wine is made entirely from organically grown grapes. This pale straw colored wine has very intense orange blossom and honey aromatics while delivering a full rich body with a core of pear and nectarine flavors followed by a smooth aftertaste that’s long and focussed. Savor the flavor of this organically grown white table wine with your favorite meal or by itself. Enjoy!”

What I Think:

I heard about this one ages before it arrived, can’t quite remember where I initially came across it. PeterB was the first one to mention it here and tipped me off to the blend components; Sultana (which he notes is also known as Thompson Seedless grape), Columbard and Muscat, which I was able to confirm via Wine Business. So what did I think?

Clear in color and clean with citrus and floral notes on the nose. The early palate shows lemon rocks (mineral) which are eventually washed out by a (residual) sugar component that is close to, but not quite, overpowering. The palate finishes slightly flabby and syrupy before a tart finish that shows promises of crispness. Not to be had on its own, perhaps as a Gewurzt/Riesling substitute with spicy foods. Too sweet for me but guessing many people may think differently. I have one more bottle left; so stay tuned. In the meantime I can’t recommend it based on my palate. If it sounds like it is up your alley feel free to give it a go… Fred predicts it is going to be a “million-bottle plus-brand”, what say you?

  1. I agree with the posters above like Charles, Don, Alicia, and La Feem. What exactly were you expecting for $3.99 ($2.99 in some jurisdictions, even)? It’s a California white wine. Expect a little sweet and roll with it. If you’re too good for it, spring a few more bucks for the Reserves, but until then, I’m proclaiming Green Fin the NEW Two-Buck Chuck for white wines!

      • I agree. Cheap, easy to drink, and delicious. A friend brought this over for dinner but we never got to it, so my wife and I are drinking on its own and I think it is great for the price. I’ll have to head to Trader Joe’s to pick up a few more bottles.

  2. This comes from someone who never drinks at all.. Ever. I went to Trader Joe’s to get a bottle of white wine to cook with and only had $5… and I love the label. Okay, bad reason to buy a bottle of wine, the label design, but anyway. I bought it and had a small glass while cooking. I LOVE IT!! I don’t have any fancy language or big college words … just I LOVE IT.

  3. Amazing! My new favorite summer wine. It goes perfect with my Brie, peppered turkey, w/apples sandwhich on seseame Italian bread; Deliciousness!!

  4. This wine is a perfect white wine for any occasion. It is light and crisp, yet with a full rich body. Perfect for big gatherings or as a simple gift. It is definetly a wine that anyone would drink and enjoy… even if they don’t normally drink wine! :)

  5. I LOVE this wine! The two TJ’s in my area are constantly sold out! When it comes in people buy it by the case. Great $4 wine!! Not the best wine ever, but for $4 it’s a great choice. I love it

  6. Strong oak and buttery chard that I love this is not. However, I think it’s great! For an affordable week-day dinner wine … perfect. Someone brought this to our party … so we tried it … very pleasant surprise.

  7. To me, this wine is not as sweet as a riesling or gewurtztraminer. I really like it. And the price – fantastic at $3.99 a bottle! Only wine snobs would have anything negative to say about it. All-in-all, highly recommended.

  8. This is one of my go-to wines…I like that it’s on the sweeter side, and it’s very smooth, very pleasant. And, as a broke college student, the price makes me very happy.

  9. Are you kidding? If you enjoy a crisp, refreshing and slighly fruity wine you will absolutely love this vino. Its not over powering fruity but perfect with spicey thai foods and even spicy chipotle chicken wraps (hit me up if you want a killer recipe). The best under $5.00 wine and possibly $10 wine on the market. BAR NONE! if you like Zins and have a trader joes near you, you have to try the trader joes reserve Zin…. Outstanding and at $5.99 crazy good! Cheers friends!
