2010 Pontificis Red

2010 Pontificis RedPrice: $5.99 @ Trader Joe’s imported by Latitude Wines

What They Said:

Per Trader Joe’s “The meal isn’t quite ready… still. An interesting, smooth-drinking bottle is just the thing to placate palates and provoke conversation – a “bridge builder,” if you will. This cheeky nod to Châteauneuf-du-Pape is perfect. Made from the signature Côtes du Rhône GSM blend – Grenache, Syrah & Mourvèdre – Pontificis boasts intense aromas of black fruits with spicy nuances and floral hints. With satiny tannins, it’s rich and full-flavored without being dogmatic (too early for that). It’s good. It could even carry you right through the turkey, should you wish, and you may very well at our price of $5.99* for a 750 ml bottle.”

What I Think:

(13.5%) 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 20% Mourvedre – This one comes in a formidable bottle and starts with dark, voluminous fruit but balanced, smooth and spiced too. Nice stuff. Not complex but I’d be pleased with this one in the $10-12 range so definitely worth stocking up on at $6. I picked up another half case. And if you’re looking, given the blend, this is a fine match for turkey. Drink up!

Rating: Bulk Buy <- been a long time since I dished one of these out…

Wine Geek Notes: Appears to be associated with Laurent Delaunay and hat tip to my friend Pierre for turning me onto this one

  1. soouthern California stores just got this gem in. I’ve already had a few bottles. definitely a find! no word yet or its a special buy or if it will be on going.

  2. Howdy all,

Sorry to say the Pontificus is now gone.

    However: AMAZING VALUE ALERT!
It has been reported to me by Higher Sources that B.R. Cohn has gone out of business and much as I regret their passing, we got ALL 20,000 cases!
This will be hitting the stores in May for the unheard of price of $6.99!!!
Their Cabernet is currently on the shelves for $14.99, so a $8 a bottle savings!
Now remember, I’m based up here in NCA, so I’m not sure of the status for SCA or outside CA. Sorry!

Also, for those of you that enjoy Rosenblum’s Cuvee Series, the Cabernet will be in CA stores starting Wednesday for $6.99, a $3 dollars a bottle savings.
The Zinfandel has also had a price adjustment to $6.99 so it can be featured alongside the Cab.

BTW, the Charles de Marques ($19.99) is back and a great buy on True Champagne for either celebrating the Super Bowl or Valentine’s Day.
All Pinot Noir & Pinot Meuiner, it has a bright appley quality and small awesome bubbles that can last quite a while. I did a Tasting a while back, opened the bottle, left it for an hour & 15 minutes open without a cork or cover and did a second pour where the bubbles seemed just as lively as when first opened. Don’t wait, as it showed up last night on my Order Guide as “Out of Stock” again right before another major Holiday. Ack, I should’ve stocked up.

Here’s another great idea for those of you who love classic European dessert wines. 2010 G. Chevalier Sauternes ($12.99) is a partnership between First Growth Bordeaux producer Chateau Guiraud and Trader Joe’s. The Comp Price listed if it was on their label is $29.99.
I know what I’m getting on Payday and if its good, I’m buying a case.

    Hey Jason, how’s things?
Hope the family is doing well.
    We’d love a new list/review when you get a minute : )
Oh, I got to try a Von Shubert 1985 Auslese Magnum straight from the original wood case at the last German Wine Society Tasting. Yummy! We’re having a Wine Dinner in April, you should come. I’ll send you details when I get them. : )

  3. Update
We have just blown through most of the 2011 – which is excellent – and the 2012 just started to arrive. I popped one which tasted tight and a little dry on the finish. I will report when it has settled down a bit.
