It all started as an innocent comment made by one Daddy Winebucks on my blog some time ago. From there it snowballed into the greatest and most sophisticated and complex wine event on the face of the earth before settling into what now entails Grape Madness.
What it is it?
4 stores, 4 bloggers, 32 bottles and 1 champion. Who will be left standing when the dust settles? Here’s the crew and stores involved in this exercise:
- Marc Goldsmith who blogs at Marc’s Muse will cover BevMo
- Eric Cohen who blogs at Daddy Winebucks will cover Cost Plus World Market
- R.J. Hilgers who blogs at RJ’s Wine Blog will cover Whole Foods
- Jason Rzutkiewicz who blogs at Jason’s Wine Blog will cover Trader Joe’s
How does it work?
As mentioned above, each blogger was assigned a store and a mission to pick out 8 wines. The 8 wines would make up two brackets of one through four seeds to get the tournament started. The following guidelines were put in place to manage the pricing at each seed level as follows:
- 1 – $12 – $20
- 2- $8 – $12
- 3 – $5 – $8
- 4 – $5 and under
For Round 1 there will be a blind tasting in each of the 8 brackets which will narrow the field to the finest two bottles from each store. These bottles will move forward to Round 2. In Round 2 the bloggers will pair up locally and taste the four top wines together, eventually narrowing it to the finest of the fine which will move on to the final round where all four bloggers will jointly anoint the first every champion of Grape Madness.
What are the Rules?
We aim to keep this straight and easy so the rules are limited to the following:
- All wines will be red
- All wine will be tasted blind
Likewise we aim to keep the scoring system straightforward. Wines will be scored on the 100 point scale and in cases when multiple bloggers are scoring a wine will be aggregated. The winner of each matchup will be the wine with the maximum composite score. Should a tie result, the winner will be determined based on the following rank ordered criteria:
- Lower Price
- Coin Flip
